Some home owners are not sure what cabinet door style to go with when planning their kitchen renovation project. Today's most prevalent style is the recessed shaker door with a variety of frame thicknesses. The thinner the frame the more modern the cabinet looks. While some are concerned about shaker cabinets going out of style, the truth is shaker cabinets have been around for decades and are still very popular. Also, don't forget, a well-designed kitchen always remains timeless.
There are many cabinet types to choose from. They can be divided in two main categories, the framed cabinet and the frameless or European cabinet. This describes the construction of the cabinet box. The framed cabinets have a piece of wood framing around their opening, while the frameless ones do not.
Within these two main cabinet categories, there are three sub-categories. They describe the way the face of the cabinet looks:
-
Partial-overlay cabinets have quite a gap between the door and drawer faces and thus are the most economical type.
-
Full-Overlay cabinets have a very small gap between the door and drawer faces and are the most popular type because they look nicely finished and are not the priciest option.
-
Inset cabinets are the priciest because the doors and drawers fit flash into the cabinet opening and thus have to be made with great precision.

"Agni helped us design the kitchen in our 1897 Victorian. The space had a lot of challenges and she was up for that challenge. She worked well with our GC and was always available to respond to last minute questions and concerns that inevitably pop up working on an old home. She handled everything for us. There is no way I could have done it on my own. Too many decisions and choices and she made it easy"

Let's talk Kitchen Design!
We are here to either assist you in making selections for your kitchen cabinets, countertops, backsplash and hardware, or take on the entire project from conception to completion. This design service includes layout, ceiling/lighting design, selection of all materials/fixtures/finishes, specifications, final drawings needed for the builder to implement, and support throughout construction. You are not tied to a specific construction crew. We can either recommend one or work with your own.
What we bring to the table:
The most important aspect in kitchen design is Layout. A kitchen must be arranged in such a way that it works for you, fits your lifestyle and most importantly, has the necessary clearances and ergonomic dimensions for ease of use. This is why we spend good time in the beginning of the project to understand your needs. We typically create 1-3 kitchen layouts to choose from and help you finalize the one that will function best for you. The second most important aspect in kitchen design, is Lighting. We often see new kitchens poorly lit, something unacceptable with today's lighting options and technologies. We propose a layered lighting scheme to ensure you have plenty of task lighting, but also low lighting for a more soothing mood, while watching TV, eating dinner, etc.
Ceiling Details, such as a dropped, coffered, or tray ceiling above your kitchen island, are an excellent way to define the space and add architectural interest. These design elements can also integrate functional and decorative lighting to serve as a stunning focal point. We are here to design it for you, and document it for the contractor.
Plumbing Fixtures and Appliance Selections are also critical in kitchen design and we are more than happy to help you make these choices, as a part of our kitchen design service.
